OPENING RECEPTION & AWARDS CEREMONY: The Art of Jazz

Join Berks Arts Council for a celebration of Jazz and the visual arts! Founded during Berks Jazz Fest 2005, the Frank Scott Memorial Art Show:The Art of Jazz honors legendary local jazz artist Frank Scott. The theme "Celebrate Jazz" is an opportunity for the artist to reflect on what Jazz means as interpreted by visual arts.

The exhibition is on view March 26 – April 27 in the Schmidt Gallery at the GoggleWorks Center for the Arts.

SOUTH Jazz Parlor at Berks to host 13 concerts at DoubleTree
The iconic SOUTH Kitchen & Jazz Parlor in Philadelphia and Berks Arts Council have reached an agreement making SOUTH, one of the 50 Best Jazz Clubs in America, a major branding partner with the 27th annual Boscov’s Berks Jazz Fest. This new jazz club venue at the Fest will be in the DoubleTree ballroom during the 10-day festival.

The club will be branded SOUTH Jazz Parlor at Berks. “We are excited about our partnership with the Berks Jazz Fest,” said SOUTH Kitchen & Jazz Parlor owner Robert Bynum. “We are pleased to be working with a wonderful organization like Berks that has that same commitment and dedication to this wonderful art form of jazz.” WRTI 90.1 FM radio will be the media partner for the SOUTH Jazz Parlor at Berks. “It’s a wonderful collaboration between the Boscov’s Berks Jazz Fest, SOUTH Kitchen & Jazz Parlor and WRTI,” said WRTI jazz host Jeff Duperon. “WRTI has been associated with and a supporter of the Boscov’s Berks Jazz Fest since its inception."

MARCH 4: An Evening of Beethoven

Beethoven’s dramatic music takes center stage with his Leonore Overture No. 1, his majestic Second Symphony, and his Triple Concerto, featuring three musicians at the top of their game in a unique collaboration—pianist Fabio Bidini, violinist Sabrina-Vivian Höpcker, and cellist Andrew Shulman. Tickets $20 - $80, with a 10% discount for current BAC members.

Esther, an independent but lonely African-American seamstress, earns her living making beautiful corsets for other women. When a Caribbean stranger starts a long-distance correspondence with her, Esther begins dreaming of an intimate life of her own. Pulitzer-prize winning playwright Lynn Nottage chronicles the hopes and heartbreaks of ordinary people in this haunting drama.

Berks Bards members and newcomers alike are invited to hear Dr. Phillip Terman read selected poetry. Dr. Terman is the author of five poetry and four limited edition chapbooks. His poems have appeared in many journals and anthologies. On occasion he performs his poetry with the Jazz Group the Barkeyville Triangle.

Dr. Terman will be visiting Berks for several days as a special featured guest poet for Berks Bards and Pagoda Writers'events. CLICK HERE for more information.

MARCH 5: BCIU Secondary Art Exhibit Awards Ceremony

Every year since 1981, the Berks County Intermediate Unit (BCIU) has presented an annual art exhibit featuring the creative works of exceptional Berks County secondary school students. Hosted by GoggleWorks Center for the Arts, the exhibit displays artwork by young artists from Berks County’s 18 public school districts. Also supported by Reading-Berks Guild of Craftsmen and Berks Art Council, the showcase includes a wide range of categories, including: oil, watercolor and acrylic painting, printmaking, calligraphy, sculpture, fiber arts, photography, ceramics, digital art, jewelry, basket weaving, pastel, and drawing.

Stop by the GoggleWorks and enjoy works by the artists of tomorrow! The exhibit runs from February 25 - March 5.

Perry County Council of the Arts, based in Newport, PA, is looking to fill the position of Gallery Manager. PCCA operates a 180-member art gallery as well as an historic mansion that serves as a recital and exhibition venue. The position is 25 - 30 hours/week (Wed - Sat), and will report directly to the Creative Programs Director. Must be able to work evening events.

GoggleWorks is pleased to announce an open call to all professional artists, age 18 and up, who design and produce their own work, to show in the 11th Annual Juried Exhibition. Open to all media, this exhibition aims to curate a selection of exemplary contemporary work from artists around the country. A catalog will be published by GoggleWorks Center for the Arts containing artists' bios and images of work(s), together with the juror's bio and statement.

DEADLINE MARCH 10: Adams County Arts Council Juried Exhibition
The Adams County Arts Council invites submissions to its 14th Annual Juried Art Exhibition, June 1 - 23, in Schmucker Art Gallery, Gettysburg College. Awards total $2,750 with a $1000 Best of Show prize. There is a $30 entry fee for Adams County Arts Council members and a $45 fee for non-members. Any person over 18 years of age is eligible to submit work for consideration. Deadline for submissions is March 10. Entry form and membership information available on the Adams County Arts Council website.

Abilities in Motion's Art Show & ADA Awareness Exhibit
Calling All Artists!! Abilities in Motion is hosting an Art Show & ADA Awareness event in July featuring artwork of all kinds (jewelry, paintings, weaving, etc.) Artists may sell their artwork if they choose. AIM is seeking artists in all mediums that have any disability. Deadline to register is March 31.
