Tonight! Gabriel Alegría Afro-Peruvian Sextet at the Bandshell
The Afro-Peruvian Sextet was established in 2005. The ensemble’s insistently inventive program of traditional Afro-Peruvian music transformed by Gabriel Alegría’s highly personal synthesis of folkloric Afro-Peruvian rhythms, jazz, and other musical strains has led to a signature accomplishment: developing the band’s patented blend of deep scholarship and playfulness into a touring experience that conveys a vast knowledge of the music and, perhaps more importantly, transmits music from coastal Perú as a way of life to its audiences. Visit Gabriel Alegría Afro-Peruvian Sextet for more information on the group.

JULY 28: THE APOCALYPSE BLUES REVUE
Final show of the 2017 Bandshell Concert Series! The Apocalypse Blues Revue (TABR) was co-founded by rock band Godsmack’s drummer Shannon Larkin and guitarist Tony Rombola. On tour in 2010 and tired of metal and hard rock, Larkin and Rombola discovered one another’s affinity for the Blues and would jam without boundaries. Rombola describes TABR’s sound as merging traditional Blues and heavier elements. According to American Blues Scene, “The musicianship is exemplary, the lyrics thought provoking, and the overall feeling, ominous.” A sample of their music can be found at The Apocalypse Blues Review website.

This is the third annual community production they are producing, and the second year of partnership with the Reading Public Library. In past productions, they had the opportunity to see community members experience life-changing events in their lives. This year they decided to explore the topics of Toxic Masculinity and human trafficking. Toxic Masculinity is an important topic because it shows that there are ways in which we can start to create a more just environment for all genders. They decided to explore a human trafficking story because the majority believes that this is a problem that only happens elsewhere, but in fact, it requires more vigilance because it is happening in our own community.
